Kidney Failure – Choose the Right Treatment for a Healthy Life

Choosing the right treatment for kidney failure is crucial. The treatment depends on the stage of kidney disease. It may include medication and dialysis or transplant in the severe stages.

How do I know which kidney treatment is right for me?

There are two treatment options for kidney failure - dialysis and kidney transplantation. Dialysis has two main types - hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

You can decide what will be the best treatment for you according to your lifestyle needs. If kidney failure is a temporary problem for a patient then dialysis can be stopped when kidneys recover. But in most cases, someone with kidney failure will need a kidney transplant. You may need dialysis until a suitable donor kidney becomes available.

So it’s always better to talk with your health care provider before undergoing any particular treatment.

How does kidney dialysis work?

In dialysis, a machine is used to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys fail to do this function.
  • Hemodialysis: Your blood is pumped through a filter outside your body in this procedure.
  • Peritoneal dialysis: Your blood is cleaned inside your body, not outside your body.

When do you need a kidney transplant?

A healthy kidney from a deceased or living donor is placed into the patient’s body who is suffering from end-stage kidney failure.
Ideally, kidney transplantation is performed when a suitable kidney donor is available - living or deceased.

A kidney transplant is often preferable to dialysis as it provides a better quality of life than dialysis.
